Kanchanaburi

Today you will visit some of the sights in the region: the bridge over the Kwai River, the train known as the Death Railway and the Hellfire Pass. During the Second World War, the Japanese occupying forces used forced labourers and Western prisoners of war to build a railway bridge over the Khwae Yai. As around 116,000 workers died, the railway link was also known as the Death Railway. The Bridge on the River Kwai was also made famous by the 1957 film of the same name, which won numerous Oscars. The Hell Fire Pass is a 73 metre long and 25 metre deep mountain gorge, which was largely cut by hand by prisoners of war.
