Colombo
As the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo is the first address on the island where travellers arrive. The first Europeans were Portuguese, who developed Colombo into an important trading centre at the beginning of the 16th century. The historic centre is the fort, which was built to protect the harbour and is now a popular business district. The twin towers of the World Trade Centre Colombo are also located here. In the market district of Pettah, close to the harbour, street vendors offer their colourful wares. Galle Road is the main artery of Colombo, connecting the centre with the suburb of Mount Lavinia.
